DeAndre Kane made his name in Pittsburgh basketball years ago but this week, his return to the city made headlines for all the worng reasons.

Kane, 36, a former Schenley High School star who later became a professional basketball player overseas, was arrested Friday, May 30, at Pittsburgh International Airport in connection with more than $100,000 in unpaid child support, according to the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office announced the arrest Saturday, saying Kane had been wanted since 2023 after missing a Family Court hearing related to child support payments and officials said he became a “fugitive” after he “failed to appear in Family Court.”

Authorities said detectives recently learned that Kane would be flying back to Pittsburgh from Iceland on Friday. When he arrived and got off the plane, members of the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office and the Allegheny County Police Department took him into custody at the airport. The athlete was then transported to the Allegheny County Jail, where officials said he would await a hearing in Family Court.

Kane once helped lead Schenley High School to a City League basketball championship in 2008, becoming part of the school’s celebrated basketball history. After high school and college, Kane continued his playing career internationally.

Since 2014, he has competed for several professional basketball teams overseas, according to authorities.
