Reshona Landfair spoke candidly about revisiting one of the most painful moments of her past and how it later became a viral comedy moment. The singer and author, who was identified publicly for the first time this year as the minor in R. Kelly’s criminal case, reflected on seeing her trauma parodied in a 2003 episode of Chappelle’s Show.
Landfair, now 41, appeared on The Joy Reid Show while promoting her memoir, Who’s Watching Shorty?, which details her experience as a teenager caught in the singer’s abuse and the lasting effects that followed. At the time the videotape circulated, she was just 14 years old.
“I felt terrified,” Landfair said. “I felt very embarrassed and very confused because something that was so vulnerable for me was humorous and a mockery to the world.”
She explained that the sketch intensified feelings she already carried after learning the tape had leaked.
“For so long this was a huge secret,” she shared. “I had been groomed to never admit this, so I was scared more than anything.”
Landfair added that the attention left her feeling “empty inside” and deeply ashamed. While Joy Reid noted she did not believe the comedian intended harm, Landfair said the impact mattered more than intent.
“It was insult to injury,” she said, adding that humor around her experience made healing even harder.
