Terence Crawford Shocks Fans With Sudden Retirement

Tiffany Brockworth |

Terence Crawford is stepping out of the ring for good. The undefeated boxing superstar announced his retirement on Tuesday, just three months after his epic fight with Canelo Álvarez.

In a video shared on social media, the 38-year-old Nebraska native explained that the decision was about timing and peace rather than ability.

“I’m stepping away from competition, not because I’m done fighting, but because I’ve won a different type of battle,” Crawford said. “The one where you walk away on your own terms.”

Crawford leaves the sport with a pristine 42- 0 record, including 31 knockouts, and as the reigning WBA, IBF, and WBO super middleweight champion.

His September victory over Álvarez in Las Vegas was widely praised as a masterclass, with Crawford controlling the bout from start to finish. However, he was recently stripped of the WBC belt over a sanctioning fee dispute. Turning pro in 2008, Crawford rose through multiple weight classes and captured his first world title in 2014 against Ricky Burns.

“I spent my whole life chasing something,” he said. “Not belts, not money, not headlines. I fought for my family, my city, and the kid I used to be.”
