Summer Walker is taking her fight for freedom to court, accusing her longtime label, Love Renaissance Records, of fraud and financial misconduct as she fights a separate $50 million lawsuit from Interscope Records.
The Grammy-nominated singer filed a lawsuit against Love Renaissance, also known as LVRN, alleging the company exploited her trust after signing her at 19, according to documents Rolling Stone obtained.
Walker claims the label improperly used money from her touring, recording, and marketing budgets while withholding earnings from merchandise and online platforms that feature her name.
Her attorney, Keith Moten, says the singer is no longer willing to accept the arrangement.
“She’s a mother now, and she doesn’t trust blindly anymore,” Moten told the outlet. “She’s ready to fight for herself, her freedom and her peace.”
Walker is seeking financial damages and asking the court to declare her 2017 agreement with LVRN unenforceable.
Meanwhile, Interscope and its parent company, Universal Music Group, have filed their own lawsuit, claiming Walker could owe more than $50 million for trying to leave her recording contract before fulfilling her album obligations.
The singer disputes those allegations and plans to fight back.
“Summer has given LVRN iconic music, and some of the best years of her life,” Moten said.
