Chuck D is weighing in on the ongoing debate over hip hop’s place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, offering a thoughtful response to recent comments made by Gene Simmons.
The Public Enemy frontman, 65, shared his perspective on X after Simmons questioned why rap artists have been inducted into the Hall. “Gene definitely has his opinion and it carries major weight,” Chuck D wrote. “However it is The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.”
Simmons, 76, sparked conversation during a podcast appearance when he said hip hop “doesn’t speak my language” and argued that the genre belongs outside rock’s most celebrated institution.
Chuck D is thee right person to address Gene Simmons’ tone deaf commentary.

I love how he focuses on the importance of music creation and narratives because it’s not enough to own our stories.
We have to keep telling them too. #BHMpic.twitter.com/qSIqLcxNTZ
He also compared the absence of Iron Maiden to the inclusion of artists like Grandmaster Flash, adding, “I just want to know when Led Zeppelin’s going to be in the Hip Hop Hall of Fame.”
Chuck D acknowledged the debate while offering a wider lens. “Not considering it ‘rock’ may hold a debatable point,” he continued, “but clearly rap and some other genres of movement are the ‘roll.’”
The rapper also reflected on music’s evolution over time. “Rock and roll clearly splintered all over the place in the 1960s,” he wrote, “and big banged ever since.”
