Tay Keith’s cause of death has been revealed three months after the Grammy-nominated producer was found dead inside his Nashville apartment.
Keith, 29, died from an accidental drug overdose, a source at the Nashville medical examiner’s office confirmed to Rolling Stone. The source said the producer died from “combined mitragynine, 7-Hydroxymitragynine, mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, and ketamine toxicity. The manner of death was accident.”
Mitragynine is an alkaloid found in Mitragyna speciosa, the plant commonly known as kratom.
Keith, a Tennessee native whose real name was Brytavious Lakeith Chambers, was found dead June 18 after police conducted a welfare check at his Martin Street apartment.
“He was found dead in his Martin St apt this afternoon by officers performing a welfare check,” the Metro Nashville Police Department said at the time. “His death is unclassified pending autopsy results.”
Police also said there were no signs of foul play.
Keith began making beats as a teenager before becoming one of hip-hop’s most sought-after producers. His résumé included Drake and BlocBoy JB’s “Look Alive,” Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode,” Eminem’s “Not Alike” and Beyoncé’s “Before I Let Go.”
He also executive produced Sexyy Red’s 2024 album Sexyy We Trust and produced her hits “Pound Town” and “SkeeYee.”
