More than 143,000 people have signed a petition calling for Pink to be removed as a UNICEF Ambassador after the singer criticized Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian performance on Ed Sheeran’s tour.
The Change.org campaign, created on September 11, argues that Pink’s response is incompatible with what organizers believe someone representing UNICEF should do. “An ambassador should unify, not divide,” the petition states.
The backlash began after Macklemore used his September 4 performance at MetLife Stadium to voice support for Palestinians and performed “Hind’s Hall.” Pink later reposted an Instagram Story from StopAntisemitism criticizing his appearance, without adding her own commentary. She subsequently addressed the criticism in a lengthy statement.
Pink, who is Jewish, said she was “standing up for my own people” and maintained that Palestinians “deserve a future that honors their humanity and their aspirations.” She also said she was not calling for Macklemore to be silenced.
The petition has continued gaining signatures, surpassing the previously reported 138,000 mark. Change.org listed more than 146,000 verified signatures Sunday.
Pink has worked with UNICEF since 2015, primarily promoting children’s health and nutrition programs. UNICEF USA continues to list her among its ambassadors.
