Latto Reveals Why She Really Said She Was Retiring from Rap

Latto is opening up about her brief retirement announcement from rap.

During a new Apple Music conversation with Nadeska Alexis, the rapper said she was dealing with postpartum depression when she told fans that Big Mama would be her retirement album. The timing was intense for the new mom, who was adjusting to life after welcoming her first child while also preparing to release a major project.

“I was overwhelmed. I’m experiencing motherhood for the first time. I’m dropping my album, my last album that I owe the label. So, it’s just like I was going through it that day,” Latto said. “Today’s a good day. I wouldn’t say I’m retiring today. Talk to me next week and I might say, ‘Nah, that sh*t was for real.’”

She also spoke plainly about hitting a breaking point. “I’m going through it. And hey, listen, I crashed. It is what it is,” she said. “I’m not trying to be perfect anymore. I crashed. It is what it is.”

Latto’s new chapter comes amid a more public phase in her relationship with 21 Savage.

After years of speculation, the “Big Energy” rapper confirmed in 2025 that the two were together, calling him her “husband” and saying, “My man, my man, my man.” Their history also includes collaborations such as “Pull Up” and “Wheelie.”

Big Mama follows several career wins for Latto. “Big Energy” became her first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 3, and her Grammy nominations include Best New Artist and Best Melodic Rap Performance.
