Nearly 30 years after Tupac Shakur was gunned down in Las Vegas, the only man ever charged in the rap icon’s killing has been found guilty.
A Las Vegas jury convicted Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, of first-degree murder in connection with the September 7, 1996, drive-by shooting. Jurors deliberated for about three hours before returning the verdict.
Keffe D, who pleaded not guilty and did not testify during the trial, is scheduled to be sentenced October 13. He faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Tupac’s sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, was in the courtroom for the verdict. After it was read, she embraced a man seated behind her and wiped her eyes with a tissue.
Before court adjourned, Keffe D raised his hand, asked for his electronics back, and said he planned to appeal. The judge told him an appeal “happens after sentencing” and ordered him held without bail.
Prosecutors accused Keffe D of organizing the shooting as retaliation for an attack on his nephew, Orlando Anderson, inside the MGM Grand hours earlier.
A major part of the state’s case was Keffe D’s recorded 2008 interview with investigators. In it, he said he was riding in the Cadillac that pulled alongside the BMW carrying Tupac and Marion “Suge” Knight.
Tupac was shot multiple times and died six days later. He was 25.
