Gayle King’s ex-husband, William Bumpus, is publicly revisiting his apology after King opened up about the affair that ended their marriage.

Bumpus, who was married to the CBS journalist from 1982 to 1993, issued a new statement after King discussed finding him with another woman in their Connecticut home during a recent Call Her Daddy appearance. He apologized to King, their children, Kirby Bumpus and William Bumpus Jr., and their families for “the pain I caused decades ago.”

“Gayle has every right to share what was a painful chapter that changed the trajectory of our marriage and our family nearly 40 years ago,” Bumpus said. “I respect her right to tell her story, and that’s where I’ll leave it.”

King said the moment happened in 1990 after she returned early from Washington, D.C, to find Bumpus coming out wearing a towel and saying, “You can’t come in!” before she found a woman she considered a friend “cowering behind the door, in my towel.”

“I can’t believe that you are here and that you are doing this,” King said she told her.

Bumpus, a lawyer and former Connecticut assistant attorney general, also praised King as a co-parent and said they “remain in a good place.” King told TMZ, “This happened so long ago that we are both healed, we are both moved on,” making clear the exes have moved past the split.
