Faizon Love came straight for Aries Spears after the comedian questioned the hype surrounding Bernie Mac.
Love responded yesterday in an Instagram video.
“Bernie Mac was a compadre of mine,” Love said. “We shared a lot of laughs together. […] In regards to Aries Spears, consider the source,” he continued.
Spears, 51, stirred debate during a recent appearance on Live From The Green Room when he was asked to name an acclaimed comedian whose praise he never quite understood.
Before naming Mac, Spears acknowledged that his answer would likely upset people.
“What I’m about to say, you shouldn’t,” Spears explained. “It would be deemed blasphemous by the Black community because we hold these people and these institutions to such high regard.”
Spears said Mac’s distinctive cadence often got in the way of the jokes for him. He compared the late comedian’s voice to the teacher from the “Peanuts” cartoons while explaining why Mac’s style never fully connected with him.
Bernie Mac broke through nationally as part of The Original Kings of Comedy alongside Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer and D.L. Hughley, then starred in The Bernie Mac Show, which ran from 2001 to 2006 and earned critical acclaim. His film credits included Ocean’s Eleven, Bad Santa and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and Transformers. Mac died in 2008 at age 50.
