Michigan Democrat Haley Stevens has sparked outrage within her own party after endorsing Republican Mike Rogers for Senate just two days before the election, prompting furious accusations of betrayal from Democratic leaders.
Stevens, who narrowly lost the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed, announced her surprise endorsement Sunday after a fallout with his campaign.
The beef began over an advertisement from an outside political group linking rising living costs to U.S. support for Israel. Stevens demanded that El-Sayed condemn the ad before appearing alongside him at a campaign event, but his campaign withdrew her invitation.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer blasted Stevens’ decision as “a despicable betrayal.”
Nancy Pelosi was equally critical, accusing Stevens of having “chosen to dangerously betray Michigan families’ healthcare, freedoms and future with her horrific endorsement.”
Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel declared Stevens was not a member of the party “nor will she be in the future.”
President Donald Trump, however, welcomed the unexpected support for Rogers, calling Stevens a “highly respected Democrat.”
During a Sunday rally in Iowa, Trump even floated the possibility of Stevens switching parties.
“I’d love her to join the Republican party, actually, I think that could happen maybe,” he said.
Stevens’ endorsement also drew backlash from New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who accused her of abandoning working-class voters. She has been slammed as a “traitor,” and several of her team members have since resigned.
here’s the entirety of the seeming mental breakdown Haley Stevens just had on CNN. One of the most bizarre and incoherent political interviews I can recall. Note how she’s completely unable to explain why she changed her mind from supporting Abdul El-Sayed last night to endorsing Mike Rogers today.
