Chris Brown is asking a judge to erase a nearly $13 million verdict against him and order a new trial over his former housekeeper’s dog attack lawsuit.
The singer filed a notice in Los Angeles on Friday declaring that he and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, intend to challenge the judgment entered July 16.
A jury found Brown liable after his 200-pound Caucasian shepherd, Hades, attacked Maria Avila while she was taking out trash at his Tarzana, California, home on December 12, 2020. Jurors awarded Avila $12.9 million in damages.
Avila said the dog mauled her face and arm, leaving injuries that required dozens of stitches and skin grafts. She also claimed she suffered nerve damage that has made working difficult.
Brown’s attorneys listed several reasons they believe the case should be tried again, including alleged irregularities that prevented a fair trial, jury misconduct, insufficient evidence and what they called an excessive damages award.
A hearing on Brown’s planned request is scheduled for September 22. The judge will consider his legal team’s arguments before deciding whether the verdict should stand.
Brown is currently touring with Usher on “The R&B” tour. The hearing is scheduled between the singers’ Las Vegas and Los Angeles concert dates.
