Anthony Joshua has shared his first public message since surviving a devastating car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and team members.
The former unified heavyweight boxing champion posted a photo to Instagram on Sunday showing himself seated on a couch alongside his mother and three other women.
He kept the caption brief, writing, “My Brothers Keeper.”
Joshua, 36, was visiting Nigeria just days after his high-profile victory over Jake Paul in Miami, a bout streamed on Netflix that reportedly earned him a massive payday. While traveling in Lagos last week, the vehicle he was riding in collided with a stationary truck. Joshua was not driving at the time.
Trainer Latif Ayodele and strength and conditioning coach Sina Shami were killed in the crash. Joshua attended their funerals on Sunday, according to multiple reports.
Nigerian president Bola Ahmed Tinubu previously addressed the tragedy, saying, “I have spoken with AJ to personally convey my condolences over the passing of his two close associates. I wished him a full and speedy recovery, and prayed with him.”
Footage from the scene showed the boxer visibly shaken as emergency responders helped him from the damaged car. He was taken to the hospital with injuries and later released.
The driver, identified as Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, along with additional offenses.
