A 101-year-old former concentration camp guard has been found guilty of being an accessory to more than 3,500 murders and has been sentenced 5 years in prison.
The man was a former guard at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp from 1942 to 1945.
“The court has come to the conclusion that, contrary to what you claim, you worked in the concentration camp as a guard for about three years,” the judge told him according to the Associated Press. “You willingly supported this mass extermination with your activity. You watched deported people being cruelly tortured and murdered there every day for three years.”
The man, identified as Josef S claimed he was innocent of the crimes.
“I don’t know why I am here,” he said.
At the camp in Sachsenhausen, tens of thousands of Jews, Soviet prisoners of war and other minorities were either murdered by shooting or suffocated to death in a gas chamber.
