A Career Of “Quiet Power”

Dee Freeman was a staple in Black Hollywood and beyond. Most recently, fans fell in love with her as Valerie Barnes(Andi’s mother) on the Tyler Perry hit series “Sistas” on BET. She was so beloved in the role that she had reportedly been invited to return for Season 11 before her health took a turn.

But her resume didn’t start there. This Louisiana native was a true character actress who appeared in some of the most iconic shows in history:

  • Soap Royalty: She had a memorable run on CBS’s “The Young and the Restless” between 1997 and 2009.
  • Prime Time Legend: You’ve definitely seen her face on SeinfeldERThe X-FilesDexterShameless, and NCIS: Los Angeles.
  • Digital Pioneer: She starred in the award-winning satirical series “Pretty the Series” for five years.

The Ultimate “Bad Gal”: From The Marines To The Stage

What many fans don’t know is that Dee Freeman was a real-life hero before she ever stepped in front of a camera. She served six years in the United States Marine Corps—a decision she once joked started “on a dare” but ended up shaping her legendary discipline and resilience.

After her service, she conquered the stage, performing in over 80 theatrical productions. At the time of her passing, she was working on adapting her one-woman show, Poison Gun, into a novel based on her family’s history.

“No Regrets”

In her final moments, Dee’s spirit remained as sharp as ever. Her son, Shane, shared that when asked how she was doing near the end, she simply replied, “Can’t complain. On the other side doesn’t do you any good.” She passed away knowing she lived life exactly on her own terms, doing what she loved most.

Dee is survived by her two children, Amber and Shane, and a legacy of work that will inspire generations of Black actresses to come.

Rest in Power, Dee Freeman. You were a Marine, a Mother, and a Master of your craft. Let’s show some love for this legend in the comments!
