Rapper Cartel Bo’s defense says the woman who accused him of holding her captive has taken back her story, while prosecutors claim he may have pressured her to do it.
The rapper, born Warren Brown, is accused of kidnapping the mother of his children and confining her inside a closet at a Cypress, Texas, residence for days in July. Authorities said she escaped after Brown was arrested during a traffic stop on July 25.
According to a search warrant, the woman fled wearing only her underwear and handcuffs before flagging down a neighbor. She was later located at a Waffle House and transported to a hospital.
At Brown’s bond hearing Monday, his attorneys presented a video statement and notarized affidavit in which the woman said she no longer wanted him prosecuted and also claimed that officers pressured her to give her initial account while she was under the influence.
Prosecutors argued the reversal may not be genuine. They alleged Brown used another inmate’s login information to contact the woman from jail and urge her to recant. Defense attorney Samuel Milledge II said the calls were not played in court and that he had not confirmed Brown’s involvement.
“The allegations are very salacious, but allegations are just that,” Milledge said.
Prosecutors also displayed a photograph of bruises on the woman’s legs. The state said the injuries came from beatings, while the defense attributed them to rough sex and dancing.
