Stefon Diggs’ release from the New England Patriots surprised many fans, but Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon says the move was not unexpected.
Speaking shortly after the news broke, Moon told TMZ that the team’s decision likely came down to a combination of performance, finances, and the wide receiver’s recent legal situation.
“You know, it doesn’t surprise me,” Moon said. “He brings a lot of baggage wherever he goes right now. He has off the field stuff, and he wasn’t as productive over the last part of the season as he had been in the first part.”
Diggs recently pleaded not guilty to charges of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery. The case remains ongoing, and it is unclear whether the legal matter played a direct role in the Patriots’ decision.
On the field, Diggs still produced during his only season in New England. The 32-year-old receiver started all 17 games and finished with 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, leading the team in receiving.
Moon also noted that the NFL’s financial side likely factored into the move. Diggs was entering a more expensive portion of his three-year contract.
“Salary cap wise, they can probably use that money to upgrade the position,” Moon said.
He added, “I think he’ll find somewhere to go.”
