Randy Jackson lost 114 pounds (52 kilograms) following gastric bypass surgery. At the time, he told his fans that he needed to lose the weight, so that he could get his type 2 diabetes under control.
Randy has talked about his health journey before. He made an appearance on The Dr. Oz Show last year. He revealed the moment when he knew things had to change. The music legend was inspired to lose weight because of the singing competition and what he saw in the mirror.
“Well, being on the show, being overweight, having mirrors in my house because on Idol, different than any other show, I think it’s the greatest music game show ever, because we were really real with contestants,” Randy Jackson told Dr. Oz. “If you said to a contestant, you may need to drop some weight because you’re trying to build stars, you’ve got to work on your image and they would look at me.”
The low point in his life was when he ended up in the ER “with blood sugar over 500.” Randy’s doctor warned him that he needed to do something about it. So, he embarked on his health and lifestyle journey. His weight loss is the reason why he looks different these days.
Jackson began his career in the 1980s as a session musician playing bass guitar for an array of jazz, pop, rock, and R&B performers. He moved on to work in music production and in the A&R department at Columbia Records and MCA Records. Jackson is best known from his appearances as the longest-serving judge on American Idol and executive producer for MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew.
In May 2020, Jackson was rehired as bassist for Journey following their sudden split with founding member Ross Valory. Jackson had previously filled the role on the band’s 1986 album Raised on Radio and its tour.
