Humans are born with either 24 ribs (12 pairs) or 26 ribs (13 pairs). The ribs main function is to protect your lungs, heart, and other internal organs. However, not all ribs in the body are considered a necessity.
7 sets of ribs in the body termed as true ribs (attached to breastbone and sternum), while the remaining 5 sets are termed false ribs (attached to cartilaginous tissue), in addition, the latter 2 sets of the false ribs termed floating ribs (not attached to any tissue in front).
The floating ribs are commonly extracted during plastic surgery procedures, to equip patients with reduced waist size.
The other 10 “false” ribs can also be removed – to give a woman a very slender waist.
