Former President Donald Trump is suing his former attorney, Michael Cohen for $500 million in damages for allegedly breaching his contract as his personal attorney.
In the lawsuit, Trump accuses Cohen of spreading false information about him and says Cohen breached his contractual obligations in public statements, published books, podcast series and other media platforms and appearances.
“This is an action arising from [Cohen’s] multiple breaches of fiduciary duty, unjust enrichment, conversion and breaches of contract by virtue of [Cohen’s] past service as [Trump’s] employee and attorney,” the lawsuit states.
Without Cohen’s assistance, Trump would unlikely be charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.
Cohen denies Trump’s allegations against him.
“Mr. Trump is once again using and abusing the judicial system as a form of harassment and intimidation against Michael Cohen,” Lanny Davis, Cohen’s attorney, said in a statement per CNN. “Mr. Cohen will not be deterred and is confident that the suit will fail based on the facts and the law.”
