Trial For Rapper Young Dolph Alleged Killer Set For September

Lyndon Abioye |

The trial date for Justin Johnson, the man charged with killing rapper Young Dolph in broad daylight at a cookie shop in Memphis, Tennessee, has been set for September 23.

Justin has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. The trial was supposed to begin on Monday but prosecutors and Johnson’s attorney filed a joint motion requesting for a delay to present expert witnesses to discuss cellphone location records.

In February, a judge ruled that jurors in the trial of the two men accused of killing Young Dolph would come from outside of Memphis.

Judge Jennifer J. Mitchell decided in favor of a change of venue motion filed by Justin Johnson’s lawyer, who argued that due to media attention and “public visceral outrage” over the murder, his client would not get a fair trial.

“This court is wary that jurors from Shelby County will not be able to lay aside their opinions or impressions and render a verdict based upon the evidence presented,” the judge said as she handed down her ruling.
