Tory Lanez was stabbed 16 times behind bars, but California prison officials are arguing that the rapper accepted the risks associated with where he was housed.
In a recent court filing responding to Lanez’s $100 million lawsuit, acting prison warden T. Valdez claimed the rapper had “consented to his prison housing classification and assignment and assumed any risk alleged to be associated with that housing.”
The filing does not specify what Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, allegedly agreed to before the May 12, 2025, attack. Fellow inmate Santino Casio stabbed Lanez with an improvised weapon inside California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi.
His lawsuit describes the incident as an “unprovoked life-threatening attack” and alleges prison officials should have recognized the danger of housing him near Casio.
According to the lawsuit, Lanez suffered 16 stab wounds, including injuries that caused both lungs to collapse. He was airlifted to a hospital. The state’s response acknowledges the stabbing but argues Casio was responsible for Lanez’s injuries.

Lanez has since been transferred to California Men’s Colony, where he continues serving a 10-year sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion.
