Sugar Ray Leonard is asking a court to keep his son away from him and his family after claiming years of alleged addiction have made their home unsafe.
In a restraining order request filed last week and obtained by TMZ Sports, the retired boxing legend alleged that his 25-year-old son, Daniel Leonard, has been addicted to drugs for “7 or 8 years at least.” Leonard, 70, claimed the situation has grown more serious over time, with accusations involving theft, damaged vehicles, overdoses, and violence.
The former world champion alleged that Daniel has trashed five family cars in the last year, stolen from them repeatedly, and was involved in a hit-and-run incident, and even claimed Daniel has suffered four overdoses, two of which required medical help at a hospital to “bring him back to life.”
“He basically steals every day for years!” Leonard wrote in the filing. “His behavior has started to get violent.”
According to the documents, Leonard said police were called on May 19 after Daniel allegedly pushed him during a physical altercation. Leonard wrote that the encounter “got ugly” and said officers were needed. A temporary restraining order was issued after the incident. Daniel allegedly violated that order the next day, which led to his arrest.
“I love my son but he has become a danger not only himself but to his family!” Leonard wrote. He added that his wife is “extremely afraid,” and said, “We haven’t had a day of peace in 9 years.”
Leonard requested that Daniel be ordered to stay 100 yards from him, his residence, workplace, pets, vehicles, wife, and daughter, and asked that Daniel be removed from the home.
A judge granted most of the request, with a hearing set for next month.
