The Supreme Court rejected a petition to hear an appeal from R. Kelly to overturn his convictions.
Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2022 on nine counts for the “sexual exploitation of children” and “transportation of women and girls in interstate commerce to engage in illegal sexual activity,” as well as other charges.
Kelly was convicted of three child pornography charges and three counts of child enticement in Chicago last year.
His attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, filed the petition to the US Supreme Court, requesting to throw out his Chicago conviction, claiming that the statute of limitations should bar the charges.
“Defendant’s charges were time barred,” the petition reads. “Because Congress did not expressly state that the PROTECT Act should apply retroactivity and even rejected a version of the bill that include a retroactive provision, the PROTECT Act did not extend the statute of limitations and Defendant was convicted of time-barred offenses.”
Kelly will remain behind bars for a long time.
