Stephen A. Smith Could Challenge GOP After Trump’s Viral Endorsement

Tiffany Brockworth |

Stephen A. Smith says he may be stepping into the political arena, and it could put him on a collision course with Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

The longtime sports commentator told CBS News that he is “giving strong consideration” to a presidential run in 2028 as a Democrat. The comments surfaced months after an unexpected moment last year when Donald Trump publicly encouraged the idea during a NewsNation town hall.

In May 2025, former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly asked Trump live on NewsNation whether he had advice for a possible Smith campaign. Trump responded without hesitation.

“I’ve been pretty good at picking people and picking candidates,” he said. “And I will tell you, I’d love to see him run,” he said, praising Smith as “a smart guy” with “great entertainment skills.”

Smith was seated beside Chris Cuomo at the time and appeared visibly stunned, burying his face in his hands as the crowd reacted.

While Smith has not announced a formal campaign, he acknowledged that the political climate has prompted him to seriously consider leadership and public service.
