Stephen A. Smith is apologizing to Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert after spreading false claims about the former couple’s divorce settlement.
The ESPN personality admitted he got the facts wrong while discussing the pair’s finances on his show, The Culture Table, including claims that Taylor received millions in assets. Meanwhile, Shumpert was left with significantly less.
“Those statements were inaccurate, and I want to sincerely apologize to both Iman Shumpert and Teyana Taylor,” Smith said in a public apology.
During the episode, Smith claimed Taylor walked away with $25 million, another $10 million in properties and luxury vehicles, while her ex-husband received approximately $2 million and had nowhere to live.
“I know this for a fact because I personally spoke to Teyana Taylor, who verified herself that the information circulating out there is patently false,” he explained.
Taylor and Shumpert finalized their divorce in 2024 after roughly a decade together. The former couple shares two daughters.
Smith, CEO of Straight Shooter Media, accepted responsibility for sharing the misinformation.
“We didn’t meet that standard here. Plain and simple,” he added.
Earlier this month, Smith faced backlash for remarks about former Philadelphia Eagles player Lane Johnson and mental health.
