Spanish prosecutors want Shakira to spend 8 years in prison for her alleged tax fraud.
On top of the 8-year and two-month sentence, if she’s convicted, they want the singer to pay a 20 million euro fine.
Shakira faced charges of failing to pay the government $14.5 million euros in taxes between the years 2012 and 2014. She turned down a plea deal and decided to go to trial. They claim she spent more than half of each year between 2012 and 2014 in Spain and should have paid taxes in the country.
Her publicist released a statement saying that Shakira “has always cooperated and abided by the law, demonstrating impeccable conduct as an individual and a taxpayer.”
In 2019, her former husband Gerard Piqué was fined €2.1m by the Spanish national court for evading tax between 2008 and 2010. Shakira recently split from him and is now single. They were together for more than 11 years.
