Mary Bonnet is now backtracking about the now-infamous “flower bouquet” moment that aired on season nine of Selling Sunset.
The drama started when Chelsea Lazkani sent Mary a bouquet of flowers after Mary’s home was robbed. What should have been a kind gesture quickly spiraled into one of the season’s most heated storylines.
During the reunion, Mary accused Chelsea of only sending her the flowers to look good on camera, but Chelsea insisted she had no idea whether Mary was filming that day.
During an appearance on Page Six’s Virtual Reali-Tea, Mary claimed the scene was not as spontaneous as it looked on television.
“I was mad at production. I was yelling at production because they staged it,” she said. “Chelsea doesn’t know when my scene is or what time or where, so they had to have set it up.”
Mary said she had already warned producers not to surprise her while filming, explaining that she was emotionally fragile after the robbery.
“I told them, ‘I can’t have anything else that I have to deal with right now. I let you in my house. Don’t pull anything with me.’ And they just kept pushing it,” she recalled. “They were asking, ‘Who’s it from? Who’s it from?’ and I said, ‘Stop. We’re not playing games right now.’”
She admitted she eventually lost her temper, but insists her anger was directed at the crew, not Chelsea. “I wasn’t mad at her,” Mary said. “I was mad at production.”
When the episode aired, viewers accused Mary of being unfair to Chelsea and turning a minor misunderstanding into a bigger moment for herself, and that reaction came across as dismissive and even racially insensitive, since Chelsea is one of the few Black women on the show.
Mary was also slammed for making the following remarks about Chelsea.
“Her struggling-single-mom act is like—that’s—please. She’s got a rich ex-husband that pays her support,” she said. She was forced to apologize after Chelsea revealed that she does not receive any support from her ex.
