Ruby Rose says Hayden Panettiere was still deeply hurt by her strained relationship with her mother, Lesley Vogel, shortly before her death at 36, despite her mother’s recent statement, which seemed to paint a different picture.
The Hollywood actress, 40, posted screenshots to Threads on Wednesday that she said were messages from Panettiere. In one exchange, a person saved as “Hayden” wrote about being overcome by emotion over her mother.
“I was sobbing over her cruelty yesterday thinking, my god I’m 36 and she can still cause this kind of pain,” the message read. “I’m her only child left and this is how she wants to handle the situation?!”
Entertainment Weekly reported that it could not independently verify the identity of the person in the screenshots. Rose shared the messages amid renewed attention on Panettiere’s complicated history with Vogel following the actress’ death on Sunday.
Panettiere had previously discussed their fractured relationship herself. During a May appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, she recalled ending their professional relationship at 19.
“I just wanted her to be my mom,” Panettiere said. She recalled telling Vogel, “I don’t want us to work together anymore. I just want you to be my mom.”
Panettiere alleged her mother replied, “You owe me.”
Vogel later spoke publicly about her daughter’s death and criticized Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson.
The Greenville, S.C., coroner has said Panettiere showed no signs of trauma that caused her death. Her cause and manner of death remain under investigation.
