REST IN PEACE TO A LEGEND: Hip-Hop Pioneer Rob Base Passes Away At 59 After Private Lung Cancer Battle

A heartbreaking loss has officially hit the music world, as Media Take Out learns that hip-hop icon Rob Base has passed away at the age of 59. The legendary Harlem rapper—born Robert Ginyard—died peacefully on Friday, May 22, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones following a private, courageous battle with stage 4 lung cancer.

The devastating news comes just four days after the pioneer celebrated his 59th birthday, leaving fans and the entire music community in deep mourning.

The Soundtrack To A Generation

Rob Base will forever be remembered as one half of the pioneering Harlem duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock.Alongside his childhood friend and musical partner Rodney “Skip” Bryce (DJ E-Z Rock), Rob helped catapult hip-hop culture straight into the global mainstream during the late 1980s.

Their flawless discography produced some of the most recognizable, high-energy records in music history:

  • “It Takes Two”: Released in 1988, this massive smash combined the raw energy of hip-hop with a driving house music breakbeat. It became an instant pop culture staple, shattering dance floors worldwide and later being sampled by titans like Snoop Dogg and The Black Eyed Peas.
  • “Joy and Pain”: Another undeniable classic that perfectly captured the emotional highs and lows of everyday life, solidifying their status as hitmakers who brought pure joy to millions.

Reunited In Paradise

The family of the rap icon released an emotional statement on his official Instagram page to confirm his passing and celebrate the beautiful life he lived.

“Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world,” the family shared. “Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten.”

With his passing, Media Take Out notes that the legendary duo is finally reunited in the sky. Rob’s lifelong partner, DJ E-Z Rock, passed away back in 2014 at the young age of 46 following severe medical complications from diabetes. The two friends had been inseparable since meeting in the fifth grade in Harlem, eventually building their dream from the ground up off early cassette demos.

Even in his later years, Rob Base never lost his love for the stage, keeping the golden era alive by touring heavily on the global “I Love the ’90s Tour” alongside acts like Young MC and Vanilla Ice, while actively mentoring the next generation of artists.

Thank you, Rob Base, for giving the world the incredible music and memories that became the ultimate soundtrack to our lives. Rest in power.
