Earlier this month, former Bad Boy rapper G. Dep was released from prison after New York Governor Kathy Hochul granted the 49-year-old rapper, real name Trevell Coleman, clemency.
On December 15, 2010, Coleman walked into 25th Precinct to turn himself in. He confessed to a cold case crime, the murder of a Queens man in 1993. Coleman had attempted to confess twice before but was previously considered to be under the influence of drugs and incoherent.
Speaking to The Art of Dialogue, he explained why he turned himself in after getting away with the crime for so many years.
“In order to restore balance to my life and someone’s family, I wanted to turn myself in and see what happened. I was willing to put myself on the line, whether or not he passed on. I just needed to get that off my mind,” he said, adding that he did “the right thing.”
After Hochul granted him clemency, the rapper’s sentence was commuted, making him eligible for parole and his parole was granted.
