NEW YORK CITY IS PAYING $10K TO BECOME RAPPERS?! Mayor Doubles Individual Artist Grants To $10,000… As City Aims To Save Hip-Hop Culture!! (DETAILS)
New York City is dropping major bags for local creatives, and social media is officially going wild over the news!
Media Take Out has learned that Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, along with Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su and Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) Commissioner Diya Vij, just announced a massive new initiative—doubling city-funded grants for individual artists from $5,000 to a whopping $10,000 each!
While the city’s press release highlights filmmakers, dancers, writers, and painters, hip-hop fans across the five boroughs are already calling it the “teen rapper fund”—pointing out that aspiring young artists and local rappers can now apply for up to $10,000 in funding to record music, drop videos, and launch their careers!

INSIDE THE $10,000 ARTIST GRANT UPGRADE
This marks the first time in nearly 20 years that the city has increased the grant size for local artists, giving creatives a huge financial boost to stay and work in New York City:
- Doubling The Bag: With the cost of living skyrocketing, local artists—including teen musicians and emerging rappers—can now secure up to $10,000 in direct funding through local arts councils in each borough.
- Borough Breakdown & Deadlines: Funding is being distributed across the city right now! Deadlines are approaching quickly:
- Brooklyn: Brooklyn Arts Council (Deadline: October 11, 2026)
- Bronx: Bronx Council on the Arts (Deadline: October 30, 2026)
- Manhattan: Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (Deadline: November 12, 2026)
- Queens: New York Foundation for the Arts (Deadline: November 17, 2026)
- Staten Island: Staten Island Arts (Applications open November 2026)
- Free Materials & Shopping Days: On top of the $10,000 cash grants, grantees will get exclusive, free access to Materials for the Arts (MFTA) on the first Monday of every month starting in October to grab free equipment and creative supplies!
CITY HALL PUSHES TO KEEP CREATIVES IN NYC
Mayor Mamdani made it clear during the announcement that the city wants to ensure working artists aren’t priced out of the neighborhoods they helped build:
“Artists are working New Yorkers with the same costs as everyone else. But while rent, grocery bills and child care costs have skyrocketed in New York City, the funding artists rely on has stayed flat. Doubling these grants is a critical step towards making sure that the painters, musicians, filmmakers, and other artists who bring life to this city can afford to call it home.” — Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani
SOCIAL MEDIA REACTS TO THE ’10K RRAPPER FUND’
As soon as the announcement broke, teenagers and young artists across TikTok, Instagram, and X flooded comment sections with plans to secure their $10,000 grant money:
- Studio Time & Music Videos: Aspiring rappers are already planning to use the 10k to buy professional studio equipment, hire directors for drill videos, and market their mixtapes nationwide.
- Saving The Culture: Commentators noted that hip-hop was born right in New York City, and giving local youth $10,000 checks could help usher in the next generation of global music superstars!
