Neptunes’ Chad Hugo Sues Pharrell Williams for Fraud Over Missing Music Royalties
One of hip-hop’s most legendary creative partnerships is now facing a serious legal breakup.
Chad Hugo, one half of The Neptunes and a founding member of N.E.R.D., has filed a lawsuit against longtime collaborator Pharrell Williams, accusing him of fraud, financial mismanagement, and withholding royalties.

The two producers have been musical partners for more than two decades, crafting hits for everyone from Jay-Z and Beyoncé to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. But now, Hugo claims that behind the scenes, he was being cut out of money he was legally owed.
At the center of the lawsuit is N.E.R.D. Music, LLC, a company the trio — Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, and Shay Haley — formed in 2014 to manage their group’s business.
According to the complaint, Pharrell was solely responsible for handling the company’s finances. That included tracking income, expenses, touring revenue, royalties, and merchandise profits — and providing regular accounting to Hugo and Haley.
Hugo claims that never happened.
Under the company’s agreement, the money was supposed to be split as follows:
• Touring and other income:
Pharrell 50%
Hugo 25%
Haley 25%
• Merchandising and trademark income:
Split evenly among all three members

But Hugo says he has been asking for financial transparency since 2021 and has received “almost no meaningful response.”
The lawsuit alleges that he never received his full share of royalties from The Neptunes and N.E.R.D.’s albums, streaming, touring, or merchandise deals.
Hugo says he discovered that multiple songs are missing from his label and SoundExchange portals — which, according to the suit, indicates he was not being paid properly for his work.
In the filing, Hugo states:
“A significant number of songs are missing from [my] label portals and SoundExchange portals, indicating that I have not received the royalties I am entitled to.”
He claims Pharrell failed to provide basic financial records, withheld key information, and violated the terms of their business agreement.
So far, Pharrell has not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
The case has shocked fans, especially considering how closely linked the two artists’ legacies are. For years, they were viewed as inseparable musical geniuses — but now, their partnership is playing out in court.
If Hugo’s claims are proven, the lawsuit could expose major financial irregularities inside one of hip-hop’s most influential brands.
For now, the music world is watching as this once-iconic duo faces a very public reckoning.
