Grammy winner Muni Long has exposed her record label’s alleged plan to get her to write “soulful” songs for white people.
“Me talking to the president of Atlantic asking me to write “soulful” songs for non Melanated people,” she typed across a video shared to her social media.
Muni then captioned the post: “And when I said NO one of em gone say “You can reach in that Priscilla Renea vault and see what you have in there. Boy do you know what a VAULT is? That’s where you keep the valuables. If you don’t get somewhere and sit down. I wanted to cuss them out so bad ya’ll.”
Atlantic’s current parent company is Warner Music Group, currently run by Elliot Grainge after major layoffs in September.
After years of writing for other artists, Muni Long saw a commercial breakthrough with her 2021 single “Hrs and Hrs,” which peaked within the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 and led her to sign with Def Jam Recordings. The song won Best R&B Performance at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards and served as the lead single for her third album, Public Displays of Affection: The Album (2022), which narrowly entered the Billboard 200. Her 2023 single, “Made for Me,” was met with similar success and also peaked within the Billboard Hot 100’s top 20.
She has received three other Grammy Award nominations throughout her career, including for Best New Artist, Best R&B Song (“Hrs & Hrs”), and a nomination for Album of the Year through her work on Back of My Mind (2021) by H.E.R.
