Mello Buckzz is in custody in Chicago after police said a traffic stop on the city’s Southwest Side led officers to a stolen loaded handgun under her driver’s seat.

The Chicago rapper, whose real name is Melanie Doyle, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of resisting arrest, driving with an obstructed windshield, and transporting an open container of alcohol, according to police.

The arrest happened around 7 a.m. on June 15 after plainclothes officers in an unmarked vehicle with visible police insignia spotted a black Mercedes traveling east on West 19th Street. Police said the car had an illegally tinted windshield and was stopped near 1918 S. Rockwell St.

According to a police report, an officer saw suspected marijuana in Mello Buckzz’s purse as she reached for her license, while another officer reported seeing an open bottle of Tito’s Vodka on the front passenger-side floorboard.

Police said Mello Buckzz, 25, refused repeated commands to get out of the vehicle. A supervising sergeant was called and ordered her out for about 15 minutes before officers removed her from the driver’s seat. Before she was removed, officers said they saw a gun barrel under the seat. Police recovered a loaded Glock 43X pistol with a round in the chamber.

Investigators later determined the handgun had been reported stolen out of Bedford Park. Mello Buckzz was ordered to remain in custody after her first court hearing on Monday.

Mello Buckzz is a Chicago rapper who has built her name in the city’s music scene, including with her project “HollyHOOD The Mixtape.” Her career drew wider attention in 2024 after a deadly shooting outside her release party in River North, where she later mourned the victims as friends, family members, and supporters, and called the attack “senseless.
