Cashel Barnett, a former contestant on Love Island USA, has been sentenced to jail after pleading guilty in two separate criminal cases.
According to the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office, Barnett received a one year sentence on March 16 after pleading guilty to second degree felony forcible sexual abuse.
In a separate case, he also pleaded guilty to third degree felony aggravated assault and domestic violence in the presence of a child, resulting in an additional one year sentence to be served concurrently.
Court documents state that the charges stem from allegations made by the mother of his child. In one filing, Barnett admitted he “placed his hands on the throat” of the woman in a way that affected her breathing while their daughter was present. In another, he admitted to nonconsensual sexual contact.
According to a probable cause statement, the woman told police she was lifted by the neck and slammed onto a bed during the incident. She alleged she struggled to breathe as pressure was applied.
Barnett has been in custody since June and will receive credit for time served. His attorney said, “He acknowledges that there was wrongdoing here and he regrets what happened.”
Following his release, Barnett is expected to be placed on probation with a protective order in effect.
