Danny Glover has revealed that he has Alzheimer’s disease, telling Today that the diagnosis has been part of his life for several years.
The 79-year-old Hollywood veteran shared the news Wednesday in an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt at his home, where family members sat with him as he spoke about what has changed and what has not. The disease has slowed his movement and affected his speech, but Glover said he is still finding his way through it.
“I can live with it, in a sense,” he said. “I’m sure as it advances, things are going to be different and changing.”
Glover said his family has become his anchor. “They’ve got my back,” he told Holt.
Relatives who joined him for the interview said they hope his openness helps other families feel less alone and chips away at the stigma that can follow an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
The actor also revealed that he had already been diagnosed at the time he received an honorary Academy Award in 2021. At that ceremony, Glover accepted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his long record of social and political activism.
Glover is best known for his role in the Lethal Weapon franchise, where he starred opposite Mel Gibson. His filmography also includes The Color Purple and Mandela.
