A false rumor about Kordell Stewart’s sexuality that spread throughout Pittsburgh during his time with the Steelers is getting fresh attention in an upcoming HBO documentary.
Kordell Stewart: Slash & Burn, premiering Tuesday, Oct. 27, revisits the former NFL quarterback’s career and the damaging allegation that he was caught engaging in sexual activity with another man.
The rumor circulated long before social media and followed Stewart as he navigated the pressures of playing professional football.
The newly released trailer also raises questions about whether Pittsburgh was ready for a Black starting quarterback when Stewart assumed the role in 1997.
Nicknamed “Slash” for his ability to play multiple positions, Stewart became one of the Steelers’ most recognizable players before he eventually left the franchise.
The documentary features former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, Hall of Fame running back Jerome Bettis, and Pittsburgh sports broadcaster Bob Pompeani. HBO says the film examines “the personal toll of scrutiny beyond the football field” while investigating the story that followed Stewart for decades.
The project also features interviews with Stewart and people who witnessed both his successes and difficult experiences in Pittsburgh.
As part of HBO’s NFL Shorts documentary collection, Kordell Stewart: Slash & Burn premieres at 9 p.m. ET and will stream on HBO Max.
