Kewon White is taking his conviction in the killing of rapper MO3 to the appeals process.
White, who was convicted of capital murder, has filed a notice asking for a legal review of what happened during his trial.
The filing states that White could not afford the official transcript of the proceedings. That record will now go to his appellate lawyers, Grace Shin and Niles Illich.
Shin made clear that the filing is not the same as starting the case over.
“An appeal is limited to everything that happened at trial,” she said, explaining that attorneys will review the court reporter’s record and documents filed in the case.
Illich said the key will be determining whether any mistake was serious enough to change the outcome.
“We can almost always find an issue,” he said. “Finding what’s called a reversible issue is a much more complicated, more sophisticated legal analysis.”
White was convicted in connection with the 2020 killing of MO3, born Melvin Nobles, who was shot 11 times on Interstate 35 in Dallas.
Prosecutors have said the killing was part of a murder-for-hire plot allegedly organized by rapper Yella Beezy, whose legal name is Markies Conway.
White’s trial transcript is not expected to be ready until January.
The appeals process could take more than a year.
Rapper Boosie Badazz uploaded a video, calling White out for filing an appeal.
“You wanna die in jail,” Boosie said in the below clip. “Why would you file an appeal if you gonna do an interview talking about you had to kill [Mo3]. What’s done is done. Talking about what you did to me. Why did you file an appeal? I know why. You wanna die in jail because you wanna f–k them punks.”
