Katy Perry is denying allegations made by Ruby Rose, who accused the singer of sexually assaulting her years ago at a nightclub in Melbourne, Australia.
“The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous reckless lies,” a spokesperson for Perry said in a statement shared with Variety.
“Ms. Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named.”
Rose first made the allegation in a series of Threads posts after seeing a post about Perry reacting to Justin Bieber’s recent Coachella performance over the weekend.
“Katy Perry [sexually] assaulted me at spice market nightclub in Melbourne,” Rose wrote. “Who gives a s–t what she thinks.”
The actress later said the alleged incident took place at the now-closed Spice Market nightclub when she was in her twenties and that the incident left her traumatized.
“I’m now 40,” Rose wrote. “It has taken almost 2 decades to say this publicly. Though I am so grateful to have made it long enough to find my voice, it just shows how much of an impact trauma and sexual assault takes.”
Rose also said she believes it can be more difficult to speak publicly about alleged abuse involving two women but so far, social media appears to believe her and be offering her support.
“Before I open up about something incredibly raw and traumatic, I tell myself ‘it’s ok, you don’t need people to believe you,’” she wrote in another post.
