Kanye West’s former Donda Academy employee is asking a judge to stop the rapper from arguing that he was of “unsound mind” during the events at the center of their discrimination lawsuit.
Benjamin Provo, who worked at the school in 2021, claims Ye is raising the issue too late, just as the case moves toward an October trial.
According to court documents, Provo says West never produced medical records, offered testimony about his mental state, or selected an expert to explain how any mental health issues affected his behavior, citing the rapper’s own deposition testimony.
When asked, “Do you feel like around the time you had the [Donda] school, you were not yourself around that time?” Ye replied, “No. I think that was close to me being myself, but people change, though, too.”
He added, “sometimes I intend to do good and still end up in deposition.”
Provo sued Ye, alleging he was fired because of his dreadlocks and that Black employees were treated more harshly than white employees.
Ye has denied those allegations and during his deposition, he acknowledged preferring a uniform appearance but denied firing Provo because of his hairstyle.
West is also asking the court to exclude certain past social media posts from the trial.
