As part of Hip-Hop’s 50th Anniversary, the New York Times have been speaking to a lot of rap greats…including rap duo Dead Prez, who told the outlet a story about Jay-Zs “Hell Yeah” remix.
“We were working on our Revolutionary But Gangsta album and this writer, she got our demo. She wasn’t really supposed to have it, but she had it,” stic man said. “She was working on a project with JAY-Z, and while she would be at his crib, she was playing ‘Hell Yeah’ so much. Jay didn’t know who he was, he just knew he’d been liking this song.”
He continued: “So one day he goes, ‘Yo, I like that pizza song.’ And she goes, ‘You don’t know nothing about that,’ yadda yadda. And then he’s like, ‘Do you think they’ll do something with me and let me get on that with them?’ But when she told us and asked us, we were like, ‘JAY-Z?! Hell yeah!’ No pun intended. Like, that’s JAY-Z.”
Journalist Dream Hampton hopped online to correct stic man and gave her version of the story…which was very different.
“This writer” Also, didn’t happen like this. I took Jay to see them at Joe’s Pub. I later played Jay the song &asked him to add a verse. He asked me to drop the track off at Bassline with Guru, I did. Next morning, I picked it up and he’d added a verse,” she tweeted.
