Idina Menzel, the woman whose voice was used in the hit Disney musical Frozen, is opening up about her failed marriage to actor Taye Diggs. Tony Award-winning actress and Taye met in 1995 during the original production of Rent, in which Diggs portrayed Benjamin Coffin III, the landlord.

The two were married a decade later, but the marriage lasted just 10 years. And Media Take Out learned that Idina believes that Taye’s uncomfortability with being in an interracial relationship doomed their marriage.

In a recent interview, Idina explained how Taye’s views on race led to the end of their marriage:

“We all love each other and sleep with each other,” as she put it, adding that things changed drastically out in public, away from that tight-knit inclusive space.

She continued, “[Taye] was on the cover of Essence, and Ebony, and being interviewed by all of these Black journalists, and I think he had his own stuff to deal with, with that,” Menzel shared. “And it seemed like there was some disappointment in the community with him, because he was married to a little white Jewish girl. And so I took that on too.”

When asked how Diggs felt as Idina became a Broadway star with Wicked, she promptly responded: “He was always so supportive, and probably relieved so he didn’t have to feel like he was overshadowing in some way or taking up too much space.”

But Taye messed up big time. Less than a year after he dropped Idina, she landed her biggest hit ever – singing Let It Go in Disney’s hit movie Frozen. Idina made tens of millions from that song alone. And since she wasn’t married to Taye at the time – he missed out on a fortune.
