Gayle King says she was caught off guard by her ex-husband William Bumpus’ public apology.

The CBS Mornings co-host spoke with TMZ on Thursday after Bumpus, her ex-husband, issued a statement apologizing to King, their children, and their grandchildren for “the pain I caused decades ago.”

“I did not know he was going to do it,” King told the news outlet. “When I got up this morning and read it, I was very, very surprised. He didn’t say anything to me about it, but I’m very appreciative.”

King said she was also surprised that Bumpus even agreed to speak to the news outlet, and he generally avoids speaking on his personal life to mainstream platforms.

“I was surprised that you guys found him,” she said. “He was even talking because he never talks.”

King and Bumpus were married for 11 years before divorcing in 1993. In her recent Call Her Daddy interview, King recalled coming home early during their marriage and finding Bumpus with a woman she considered a friend.

“That was a very painful time,” King told TMZ. “This happened so long ago that we have both healed and we’ve both moved on,” she added. “I’m in a really great place and so is he.”
