The NFL’s first openly gay player, Carl Nassib announced his retirement Wednesday.

“Football has been something I’ve been doing since I was eight, and I just felt like I’m very proud of my career. I’ve played a lot of games, played a lot of football, and I’m ready to move on to the next chapter,” Nassib told CBS News.

Nassib came out in 2021.

Nassib addressed his decision to retire on his Instagram page.

“It really feels like just yesterday starting out as a walk-on at Penn State,” Nassib wrote. “Football has given me more than I ever could have imagined. I can truly hang up my helmet for the last time knowing I gave it everything I had.”

“Maintaining that relationship shows that the NFL is continuing to support me,” Nassib added. “They’ve supported me so much over the last two years, and I really couldn’t have done it without that support.”
