DJ Akademiks is weighing in on Geechi Gotti’s recent arrest and talks in depth about survival in battle rap culture.
Speaking during a livestream, DJ Akademiks reacted to footage and reports surrounding the Ohio traffic stop that led to Geechi Gotti being taken into custody.
“I’ve always wondered how battle rappers survive,” Akademiks said, questioning the financial structure of the scene. “The popularity doesn’t really match the money they’re getting.”
Akademiks explained that many battle rappers are paid per appearance, often earning tens of thousands per battle, but see little return once the performances circulate online.
“They get this infamy that comes with the culture,” he said, “but the monetization is really bad.”
Using Geechi Gotti’s situation as an example, Akademiks suggested that financial pressure can push artists toward risky decisions.
“You’ve got a name, some presence, but rap isn’t paying the bills,” he said. “Some guys are living above their means.”
Akademiks also commented on the arrest itself, saying the police presence during the stop suggested prior investigation.
“When you see four or five cop cars, they already know something,” he said, adding that interstate stops are often strategic.
While stressing he was not excusing illegal behavior, Akademiks questioned why a known artist would be present during such activity.
“Why would you even be in the car?” he said. “That’s where it all went wrong.”
He concluded, “It is what it is. He got caught up, and now he’s got to deal with it.”
