Shilo Sanders Might Be Headed to the NFL β But First, Heβs Facing Bankruptcy, Debt Drama, and a Repo Man

Being the son of NFL legend Deion βPrime Timeβ Sanders comes with perks: fame, fans, and designer drip. But if youβre Shilo Sanders, it also comes withβ¦ bankruptcy court, $11 million in debt, and now, the looming threat of getting your Mercedes repossessed.
Yep. You read that right. Shilo, a safety for Colorado football and an NFL Draft hopeful, is in serious financial troubleβ and he hasnβt even hit the league yet.
According to court records filed this week,Β Mercedes-Benz Financial ServicesΒ is asking the court to let themΒ reclaim Shiloβs 2023 Mercedes-Benz, a $135,000 luxury car he bought just a few monthsΒ beforeΒ he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in October 2023. The company says Shilo has missedΒ three months of paymentsΒ (December to February), totaling $6,877 in missed cash and nearlyΒ $97,239 in remaining debtΒ on the car.

Hereβs the kicker: The current trade-in value for the car is just under $97,000, meaning even if Mercedes repossesses it, theyβll probably still take a loss.
So why is this happening now?
Well, when Shilo filed for bankruptcy last fall, it triggered something called an automatic stay, which blocks creditors from going after him β for now. But Mercedes is asking the court to lift that stay so they can snatch the Benz back, arguing the car is depreciating, the contract is in default, and theyβve waited long enough.
Whew. But wait β it gets messier.
Shiloβs massive $11 million debt doesnβt come from bad investments or wild spending. It stems from a 2015 incident, when he was just 15. According to court records, he got into an altercation with a school security guard named John Darjean, who later sued him for causing βsevere and permanent injuries.β Shilo claimed he acted in self-defense. But when he didnβt show up for the trial in 2022? The court hit him with a default judgment: $11.89 million.
Now, Darjean is fighting to make sure that money doesnβt get wiped away in Shiloβs bankruptcy filing. And Shilo? Heβs trying to walk into the NFL with a fresh start β financially and otherwise.
But that fresh start might not include his Mercedes-Benz.
And while some might roll their eyes at a college athlete driving a six-figure car while filing bankruptcy, itβs a stark reminder that celebrity lineage doesnβt always come with financial literacy. A flashy lifestyle is cute until the repo truck pulls up β especially when you havenβt been drafted yet.
Shilo Sanders may still have a shot at an NFL contract β drafted or not. But this weekβs headlines are less βfuture star safetyβ and more βmoney mess in motion.β
Letβs hope his team is better at protecting his bank account than that luxury SUV.
