Years before Travis Kelce entered the picture, Colin Kaepernick says his mother wanted him to shoot his shot with Taylor Swift.
Kaepernick revealed the surprising detail in his new memoir, The Perilous Fight, which he discussed with Jemele Hill at the National Black Footwear Forum in Detroit on Saturday.
According to Kaepernick, his mother suggested he ask Swift out while he was playing in the NFL.
“No slight to Taylor, but she was not my type,” he wrote.
He recalled dating a Black girl named Crystal as a teenager and feeling immediately at ease around her family. Kaepernick adopted by a white couple as a child.
“I could talk to Crystal, really talk to her, without having to explain myself,” Kaepernick wrote.
After the two attended homecoming together, he claims his mother hid their formal dance photo in a drawer. Kaepernick said she later encouraged him to take a white girl named Lindsay to another dance and then displayed their picture on the wall.

“It was disappointing to me that my mother didn’t seem capable of seeing who I really was,” he shared.
Kaepernick is currently in a longtime relationship with radio and television personality Nessa Diab. The couple, who have been linked since 2015, welcomed their first child, a daughter, in 2022 and have also collaborated on activism and children’s projects.
