Boxer Ryan Garcia tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance ostarine the day before he beat Devin Haney last month.
According to a letter from the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, his urine was tested ahead of the fight but the results were not received until after. The boxer’s urine sample also screened positive for 19-norandrosterone.
Garcia is refuting the results.
“Everybody knows that I don’t cheat,” Garcia said in a video posted on X. “Never taken a steroid. … I don’t even know where to get steroids. … I barely take supplements. Big lies, I beat his ass.”
He posted a picture of him holding a jar of ashwagandha root, seemingly alluding to the natural supplement being the source of the positive result. Ashwagandha is an ancient Indian system of medicine dating back 5,000 years, and is used for stress management, reduced inflammation, and enhanced reproductive health.
He now has 10 days to request that his B-sample be tested. If his B-sample does not rcome back negative, the results for his fight with Haney will be overturned.
The loss was Haney’s first of his career, leaving him with a 31-1 record with 15 KOs.
